Pleurotus sajor-caju Protein: A Potential Biosorptive Agent
Biosorption is a process in which microorganisms are used to extract and recover heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Mushrooms or macro fungi can act as effective biosorbents of toxic heavy metals. This process of biosorption is a result of physico-chemical interactions between metal ions and cellular compounds. This study aims to investigate if a specific protein is over expressed during in situ biosorption by the fleshy macro fungi Pleurotus sajor-caju, when grown on the substrate jowar straw. The protein content was observed to increase with increase in the concentration of the heavy metal Zn (in the form of Zn (II) SO4) sprayed on a mushroom bed. Native PAGE demonstrated that from the total protein present, a specific protein, which requires further characterization, was over expressed. In addition, the total carbohydrate concentration was observed to decrease with increase in the protein content.
