Recent advances in extending the shelf life of fresh Agaricus mushrooms: a review

Abstract

Postharvest browning of Agaricus mushrooms is a severe problem that reduces the shelf life of harvested mushrooms because of their continued respiration and biochemical activity. There are no simple answers and no single treatment is known to limit overall quality deterioration. However, there are several strategies that are being implemented in order to reduce the rate of respiration for mushrooms. Packaging technology is the common denominator that allows us to implement these strategies and thus is key to quality preservation. In this review, first, the major factors involved in postharvest quality deterioration are discussed and then technological advances/methods used to counteract these hurdles are presented. Mitochondrial recombination in natural populations of the button mushroom Agaricus bisporus

Abstract

In the majority of sexual eukaryotes, the mitochondrial genomes are inherited uniparentally and have predominantly clonal population structures. In clonally evolving genomes, alleles at different loci will be in significant linkage disequilibrium. In this study, the associations among alleles at nine mitochondrial loci were analyzed for 379 isolates in four natural populations of the button mushroom Agaricus bisporus. The results indicated that the mitochondrial genome in the Desert California population was not significantly different from random recombination. In contrast, the three other populations all showed predominantly clonal mitochondrial population structure. While no evidence of recombination was found in the Alberta, Canada A. bisporus population, signatures of recombination were evident in the Coastal Californian and the French populations. We discuss the potential mechanisms that could have contributed to the observed mitochondrial recombination and to the differences in allelic associations among the geographic populations in this economically important mushroom.

1- کمپوست های تلقیح شده با بقیه کمپوست ها چه تفاوتی دارند؟
2- اگر ما بخواهیم کمپوست بگیریم کمترین تعداد بسته ای که میدهید چند بسته است؟

۱- کمپوست تلقیح شده یعنی بذر خورده و نیازی به بذر زنی نیست. کافیه نکه دارید تا سفید شه
۲- دکمه ای حداقل سه تن تلقیج شده بلوکی، صدفی هر تعدادی بخواهید. البته تعداد کم تحویل دماوند
۳- سه بار یا فلش اقتصادی اما تا ۵ فلش هم میشه- فاصله هر فلش ۸ تا ۱۰ روز

A new method to apply and quantify bruising sensitivity of button mushrooms

Abstract

Mushrooms are prone to develop brown discolouration due to bruising caused by mechanical damage during harvest, which leads to reduced quality of the mushrooms. In order to study the mechanism behind discolouration and to breed for bruise-related browning resistant strains, a high throughput bruise application method and reliable quantification of browning sensitivity is essential. In this study a new bruising device was developed to bruise mushrooms in a fast and reproducible way. The bruising device can apply damage to the cap tissue of button mushrooms by a slip-shear sliding process. The severity of the bruise was quantified with a computer imaging system combined with a newly developed software programme. A protocol was developed to obtain the most reliable and reproducible method to compare browning sensitivity of different Agaricus bisporus strains. For this purpose, the extent of damage applied, time between harvest and bruising, developmental stage of the mushrooms and flushes were taken into account. The new method of bruising and image based quantification was subsequently applied to a collection of wild, commercial and hybrid A. bisporus strains and a distinction could be made between bruise-related browning sensitive mushrooms and tolerant mushrooms.

Composition variability of spent mushroom compost in Ireland

Abstract

Spent mushroom compost (SMC) has proven to be an attractive material for improving soil structure in tilled soils and increasing dry matter production in grassland soils, owing to its high organic matter content and availability of essential plant nutrients. Because of this, it is important to identify the variability in composition of SMC in order to evaluate its merit as a fertilizer/soil conditioner. For this reason, a study was carried out involving the analysis of SMC samples obtained from five mushroom growers using compost from each of the 13 mushroom composting yards currently operating in both Northern Ireland (5 yd) and the Republic of Ireland (8 yd). The selected parameters measured include dry matter, organic matter, total N, P and K, C/N ratio; plant-available P and K, pH, EC, total Ca, Mg, Na, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb; and cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin constituents. Yield of mushroom data were also collected from the selected growers. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) within two compost production yards for some parameters, therefore, for the most part, the uniformity of SMC within each yard is relatively consistent. However, significant differences (P < 0.05) were evident when comparing SMC obtained from growers supplied with compost from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland independently, particularly among total and available phosphorus and potassium values. The results obtained show that, while SMC has fertilizer merit, its variability of composition must be taken into account when assessing this value. The variability of composition is also of particular interest in the context of recent emphasis on plant nutrient management in agriculture.
